Introduction
From grandiose arias to tragic love stories, the Brooklyn Academy of Music Opera season has something for everyone. This year’s lineup includes three different operas, each performed in a unique style.
On opening night, “Carmen” will be performed in French with English supertitles. The classic opera tells the story of Carmen, a fiery gypsy who seduces a naïve soldier named Don Jose. While the novel “Carmen” was written in French, the opera was composed by Georges Bizet and first performed in 1875 in Vienna.
The following weekend, “Lucia di Lammermoor” will be performed in Italian with English supertitles. Donizetti’s tale of star-crossed lovers centers around Lucia, who is forced to marry a man she does not love. When her true love, Edgardo, hears of the engagement, he rushes to stop the wedding but arrives too late. Lucia has gone mad and murdered her husband on their wedding night.
Finally, “The Marriage of Figaro” will be performed in German with English supertitles. Mozart’s opera follows Figaro and his fiancee Susanna as they outwit Susanna’s lecherous employer Count Almaviva. TheCount has been trying to seduce Susanna and when she rejects him, he vows to thwart their marriage plans. But Figaro and Susanna are one step ahead of him at every turn.

The Schedule
The Brooklyn Academy of Music has announced their 2019-2020 opera schedule, and it is sure to be an exciting season! Here is what you can expect:
-The season will open with Puccini’s classic opera “Turandot” on September 27th.
-This will be followed by Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” on October 18th.
-Next up is Verdi’s “Macbeth” on November 8th.
-Then, on December 6th, the Brooklyn Academy of Music will present a new production of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro.”
-The season will continue with Strauss’s “Der Rosenkavalier” on January 24th.
-Next is Wagner’s “Parsifal” on February 28th.
Finally, the season will close with Verdi’s “La Traviata” on March 27th.
The Venue
The Brooklyn Academy of Music is located at 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11217. The box office is on the north side of the building on Ashland Place. The main entrance to the Opera House is on Fulton Street, between Saint Felix and Rockwell Places.
There are three levels of seating in the Opera House: Orchestra, Mezzanine, and Balcony. There are a limited number of box seats on each level. Prices for tickets vary depending on the production and seat location.

History of the Brooklyn Academy of Music Opera
The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a performing arts venue in Brooklyn, New York City, known as a center for progressive and avant-garde performance. It presented its first opera in 1859.
During the 1960s, under the leadership of Harlan Leonard, BAM became an international center for avant-garde music, presenting premières by John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In 2001, under the direction of Alisa Colin, BAM embarked on an ambitiously revitalized opera program.
Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 2012–2013 Opera season features three productions: Hans Werner Henze’s Elegy for Young Lovers, directed by Robert Wilson and conducted by Christopher Zimmerman; George Frideric Handel’s Tamerlano, directed by Mark Morris and conducted by William Christie; and Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth, directed by David Alden and conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado.
