Writing for AllMusic, Neil Z. Yeung praised the album’s production and called it “breezy” and “effortlessly cool”. In a mixed review, Pitchfork’s Katherine St. Asaph found Harris’ shift in musical direction to be insubstantial and noted that several tracks on the album are either filler or sound like retreads of his earlier work; she ultimately concluded that “Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 is Harris’ bid for summer-dominating ubiquity, and it mostly succeeds.” Sam Sodomsky of Pitchfork also gave the album a mixed review, saying: “This is an album designed as much for Spotify as it is for stereo systems, which means it’s full of moments that will delight you in one context but disappear into the ether in another.” In a more positive review, Jason Lipshutz of Billboard praised Harris’ use of guest vocalists and said: “The result is a G-funk party record built on glossy synths and blissful beats, populated with some of pop’s biggest current stars.”
