Cambodian Psychedelic Rock

Cambodian Psychedelic Rock is a subgenre of rock music that originated in Cambodia. The genre is characterized by its use of electric guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. Cambodian psychedelic rock music typically incorporates elements of traditional Cambodian music, such as the use of the xylophone and gongs, as well as Western influences.

Origins

The origins of Cambodian psychedelic rock lie in the late 1960s, when a number of young musicians began to experiment with Western rock and roll and pop music. They were influenced by the hippie movement sweeping through Asia at the time, as well as by traditional Khmer music. These musicians blended together elements of these different genres to create a unique new sound.

The first Cambodian psychedelic rock band was Vladislav Delay’s group White Flag, which formed in 1968. They were soon joined by other bands such as The Kompong Som All Stars, Pram solventless, Sunset Boulevard and Sameth Ngon. These groups began playing at clubs and parties around Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.

The Cambodian psychedelic rock scene came to an abrupt end in April 1975 when the Khmer Rouge regime came to power. Many of the musicians involved were killed or forced into hiding. It was not until the early 21st century that Cambodian psychedelic rock began to make a comeback, thanks to a new generation of musicians who were inspired by the original bands of the 1960s and 1970s.

Characteristics

Psychedelic rock is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelia, a subculture of people who used psychedelic drugs such as LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, mescaline and DMT to experience visual and auditory hallucinations, synesthesia and altered states of consciousness. Psychedelic rock can be traced back to the mid-1960s, when psychedelic culture emerged in San Francisco. The first psychedelic rock bands were The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane and The Beatles.

Psychedelic rock is characterised by its use of electronic instruments (often guitars and keyboards), distorted sound, feedback, sitars, drums and amplified vocals. It often incorporates elements of Indian music, such as the sitar, and esotericism. Psychedelic rock often uses drone tones and mellotron sounds. It is also known for its extensive use of effects units such as fuzzboxes, flangers, phase shifters and echo chambers.

“The Khmer Rock Vol. I”

“The Khmer Rock Vol. I” is a compilation of Cambodian Psychedelic Rock from the 60s and early 70s. The tracks on this album were brought to light by Daniel Ruebyn, who has been researching and collecting Cambodian music for over a decade.

This is the first volume in what is planned to be a series of compilations of rare and obscure Cambodian rock music. The tracks on this album are a mix of garage rock, psychedelic rock, and folk rock, with some elements of Cambodian pop music thrown in for good measure.

The goal of this project is to shed light on an under-appreciated and often overlooked period in Cambodian history, when the country was going through a rapid modernization process and its people were experimenting with all sorts of new ideas, including Western-style rock music.

“The Khmer Rock Vol. II”

The second volume of our Cambodian Psychedelic Rock compilation, featuring more mind-bending tracks from the golden era of Cambodian rock (1968-1975).
