Carlmont Offers Instrumental Music Programs to students in the district. These are opportunities to get involved in music and learn an instrument.

Introduction

Carlmont High School offers many different instrumental music programs that are available to all students. There are five different concert bands, three different jazz bands, three different orchestras, and a marching band. Each program is designed to challenge students of all skill levels and help them develop their musical abilities.

The concert bands perform a variety of music, ranging from classical to contemporary pieces. The jazz bands focus on music from the Jazz Age, while the orchestras perform both classical and contemporary pieces. The marching band performs at football games and other school events.

All of the programs are led by experienced and talented directors who are passionate about music education. They work hard to ensure that each student has the opportunity to grow as a musician.

The Different Programs Offered

Carlmont offers many different instrumental music programs. These programs are a great way to get involved in music and learn an instrument. Band

The Band program at Carlmont is open to all students who want to be a part of a concert band. The performing groups in the Band program are the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble. Both bands meet during 5th period and perform at various school and community events throughout the year, including Concerts, Contests, and Commencement. Students in the Band program have the opportunity to audition for membership in SCSBOA Honor Bands and other All-Star groups. Solo & Ensemble Festivals are also a part of the program, offering students valuable experience performing solo or in small chamber groups.

Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra, also called a philharmonic orchestra, is the largest and most complex type of orchestra. It usually has between 80 and 100 players. The symphony orchestra is used to play classical music. An opera orchestra is very similar to a symphony orchestra, but it performs in an opera house instead of a concert hall.

A string orchestra is made up only of string instruments: violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. A string quartet is a small group of four string players. A string trio is a small group of three string players.

A chamber orchestra is usually smaller than a symphony orchestra and consists of only one player per part. A chamber music ensemble is a small group of instrumentalists who play together in chamber music.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band program at Carlmont is open to all students in grades 9-12 who play a wind, brass, or percussion instrument. No audition is required. The band meets every day during zero period from 7:00-7:50am. During the first semester, the band performs at two school assemblies and the Winter Concert. The second semester features performances at two more school assemblies, the May Fete Parade, and the Spring Concert. In odd-numbered years, the Jazz Band attends the CSM Jazz Festival in San Mateo and performs in a venues around the Bay Area.

The Facilities

The instrumental music program at Carlmont is second to none. The school has two music rooms, each equipped with a grand piano, upright piano, electronic keyboard, and full compliment of drums and other percussion instruments. In addition, we have a complete set of band instruments that students can use free of charge.

Our state-of-the-art recording studio is available for students to use during free periods and after school. The studio is equipped with industry-standard equipment, including Pro Tools HD and Logic Pro software, a wide selection of microphones, and a digital piano.

The Instructors

One of the main draws of the instrumental music program at Carlmont is the instructors. All of the music teachers are highly experienced professionals who have a passion for teaching. They are also very supportive of their students and want to see them succeed. One parent said, “The teachers go out of their way to make sure all the students have everything they need to be successful.”
