Grunge music is a type of alternative rock that emerged in the early 1990s. It was characterized by its dirty, distorted sound and angry, pessimistic lyrics.

Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. The initial lineup was rounded out by drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr, who was replaced in 1993 by Mike Inez. Although widely associated with grunge music, the band’s sound incorporates heavy metal elements. Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released five studio albums, three EPs, two live albums, four compilations, and two DVDs. The band is known for its distinctive vocal style which often included the harmonized vocals of Staley and Cantrell.

Cantrell started to work on new material in early 1992 with Staley on lead vocals and Mike Inez on bass. Kinney entered drug rehabilitation in mid-1992, leaving the band without a drummer for about a year; he rejoined them later that year. On October 26, 1992, Alice in Chains recorded their first demo tape with harmonies that were inspired by Kiss’ Paul Stanley[17] Cantrell said it “came out of nowhere … just total inspiration.” The band then began looking for a new singer after Staley refused to sing the songs Cantrell wrote while he was away from the group getting sober. One of the demos recorded during this time was “Would?”. Original drummer Sean Kinney was contacted to play on the song as a full-time member if it were to be released as a single.[18] “Would?” ultimately became one of their signature songs; it peaked at number nine on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in 1993[19] and won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1995.[20] Layne Staley singing “Would?” live at Farm Aid IV in 1990

After Kinney returned from rehab and Inez joined as the new bassist, Alice in Chains began recording their first album Facelift in March 1990.[21] The album was released on August 21 that year; it entered the Billboard 200 chart at number 24,[22] becoming the first ever album by a grunge band to enter the chart.[23][24] Facelift went on to be certified double platinum by the RIAA[25] and has been credited as one of the releases that made grunge become mainstream.[26][27][28][29][30] The album’s second single “Man in the Box” became their first top 40 hit peaking at number 18 on Billboard’s Hot 100,[31] while “Bullroarer”, which was included as part of facelift’s bonus disc Sap (1992), peaked at number 33 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.[32]”Man in the Box” was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 1992 Grammy Awards,[33][34][35] losing to Van Halen’s “Right Now”.

Formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, the band was made up of singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl. The album featured the massive hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” which became an anthem for disaffected youth around the world. Nirvana’s success was short-lived however, as Kurt Cobain took his own life in 1994. The band’s legacy continues to this day however, as they are considered one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time.

Soundgarden

Soundgarden is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band’s full-time drummer in 1986, while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990. The band dissolved in 1997 due to internal strife over its creative direction.

After more than a decade of inactivity, Soundgarden reformed in 2010 and released a new album, King Animal (2012). As of 2012, Soundgarden had sold 21.5 million records in the United States and an estimated 8 million records worldwide.
