The song was co-written by Mars, Philip Lawrence, Jeff Bhasker, and Mark Ronson. “Up Town Funk” was released as the lead single from Mars’ second studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox (2012), on November 10, 2014. The song peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became Mars’ fourth number-one single on the chart. The song also topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and 19 other countries.

The music video for “Uptown Funk”, directed by Bruno Mars and Cameron Duddy, was shot entirely in black-and-white. Music critics also praised its visual aesthetics. The clip was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards: Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and Best Collaboration; winning two awards including “Video of the Year”. It features Mars and his band performing choreographed dance routines throughout various locations in Los Angeles during night time. In May 2016, a homemade dance video inspired by “Uptown Funk”, choreographed to its music by students at Lyseth Elementary School in Portland, Maine went viral online; which caught Ronson’s attention who then posted it to his Twitter account lauding their efforts.”
