Beethoven’s Life

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770 in the city of Bonn in the Electorate of Cologne, a principality of the Holy Roman Empire. His grandfather-and godfather- Kapellmeister Ludwig van Beethoven (1712″1773) had been Bonn’s most prosperous and eminent musician; several of his uncles were also professional musicians. Bonn was ruled by the Prince-Archbishop Elector of Cologne, Clemens August von Wittelsbach, and his court orchestra numbered some fifty players, making it one of the largest orchestras in Europe at the time.

Beethoven’s mother, Maria Magdalena van Beethoven (1746″1787), was a gentle but deeply religious woman who suffered from periodic ill health. His father, Johannes van Beethoven (1740″1792), was an unsuccessful court singer employed by the Elector during Ludwig’s childhood. As a result of his remarriage to Johanna Reiss after Maria’s death in 1787 when Beethoven was sixteen years old, Johann exposed him to considerable financial and emotional insecurity.

Always an outstanding student but never content with merely emulating others, he became dissatisfied with his own compositional efforts almost as soon as he began composing; already by 1793 he had begun to sketch plans for fugues and string quartets that would preoccupy him for years to come while continuing work on piano sonatas and sets of variation.

Beethoven’s Music

Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western music. His works span the transition from the classical period to the romantic era in classical music. They also form an important bridge between the main body of western classical music and that of less well-known yet important central European composers.
