WQXR 105.9 FM is a New York City-based radio station that broadcasts classical music programming 24 hours a day. The station is owned by Classical105Nine, LLC, a subsidiary of the New York Times Company, and is the flagship station of the syndicated WQXR Classical Network.
WQXR’s studio and offices are located in Midtown Manhattan on West 43rd Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Its transmitter site is on the Empire State Building’s 86th floor. The station has an effective radiated power of 37,000 watts (41,000 with beam tilt). In addition to its main signal, WQXR also broadcasts three HD Radio signals: 105.9-HD1 simulcasts WQXR’s main channel; 105.9-HD2 broadcast chamber music (branded as Q2 Music); and 105.9-HD3 airs WFMT Chicago’s fine arts format (branded as Chicago Public Radio).
WQXR was founded in 1936 by John Vacher as an independent radio station dedicated to classical music programming; it was the first such station in the world. At first it simulcasted on both AM 1630 kHz and FM 103.5 MHz using the call letters W2XAF and W2XAF-FM respectively before settling on its current dial position in 1949 (the 103.5 MHz repeater became WWFM in Trenton, New Jersey).

WNYC 93.9 FM is New York City’s only 24-hour classical music radio station, broadcast from the heart of Greenwich Village. The station began broadcasting in 1946 as WNYC-FM, a sister station to AM 620 WNYC, which had been airing classical music since 1930. In 1978, the two stations swapped frequencies, and WNYC 93.9 FM became New York’s first 24-hour classical music station.
Today, WNYC 93.9 FM is one of the most popular classical music radio stations in the country, with a weekly audience of more than half a million listeners. The station’s programming includes live performances from some of the world’s greatest orchestras and chamber music ensembles, as well as recordings of historic importance. WKCR 89.9 FM is a radio station broadcasting out of New York City. The station is known for playing classical music, and is one of the most popular classical music radio stations in the city.
The station was founded in 1947 by a group of Columbia University students. It originally broadcast out of a dorm room on campus, but soon moved to a studio in Avery Hall. In its early years, the station only played music during the daytime hours.
In the 1960s, WKCR began to expand its programming. It began broadcasting 24 hours a day, and started to play jazz and other genres of music in addition to classical. The station also began airing live concerts and other events.
In recent years, WKCR has continued to be one of the leading classical music radio stations in New York City. It broadcasts a mix of live concerts, studio recordings, and interviews with leading musicians.
