Types of music played
Classical music is art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western culture, including both liturgical (religious) and secular music. While a more precise term is also used to refer to the period from 1750 to 1820 (the Classical period), this article is about the broad span of time from before the 6th century AD to the present day, which includes the Classical period and various other periods. The central norms of this tradition became codified between 1550 and 1900, which is known as the common-practice period.
Western staff notation is used by composers to indicate to the performer the pitches (which pitch class each note is in), tempo, metre and rhythms for a piece of music. This can leave less room for practices such as improvisation and ad libitum ornamentation, which are frequently heard in non-Western art music and popular music. The term “classical music” did not appear until the early 19th century, in an attempt to distinctly canonize the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Ludwig van Beethoven as a golden age. The earliest reference to “classical music” recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary is from about 1836.
Popularity of the station
WPRK 91.5 FM is the student-run classical music station of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, USA. The station sign on the air in October 1949 and is one of the oldest college radio stations in Central Florida. The station originally was student-run with an emphasis on jazz music but eventually morphed into an all-classical format. WPRK is a non-commercial, listener supported public radio station that is run by Rollins College students who are passionate about fine arts and music.

They know the ins and outs of the industry, and they’re passionate about sharing their knowledge with others. Join them every weekday morning from 9am-12pm for the best in classical music.
Who are they?
Orlando’s only 24-hour classical music station, WMFE FM 90.7, serving Central Florida for over 40 years. Hosted by British-born Johnathan Wikeley, the three-hour morning show features music and interviews with local and national guests. Wikeley has been with WMFE since 2013.

WQXR-FM is a non-commercial, public radio station in New York City, broadcasting at 96.3 FM. The station is owned by WNYC, a subsidiary of New York Public Radio which also owns and operates WNYC and WQXR-AM. WQXR-FM is the flagship station of the WQXR network, which comprises four additional stations serving the New York metropolitan area.
