Swan Lake is a ballet composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76. Despite its initial failure, it is now one of the most popular of all ballets, and is performed by ballet companies around the world.

The scenario, originally in four acts, was fashioned from Russian folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger. It was first presented by the Moscow Imperial Bolshoi Theatre on 4 March [O.S. 20 February] 1877, but was not well received. The reviewer for The Spectator wrote that “The music of Swan Lake can never be accused of possessing sufficient originality to stand alone as great music.”

Tchaikovsky himself greatly disliked the four-act version and later revised it extensively for performance in Moscow and St Petersburg as a three-act ballet with a happy ending for Acts II and III; this better-known version premiered on 27 January [O.S. 14 January] 1881at Moscow’s Imperial Mariinsky Theater and has become the standard performance version throughout much of the world since World War II.

The music of Swan Lake

The composer of Swan Lake

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the music for Swan Lake in just 44 days, between August and October 1875. He had been commissioned by Vladimir Petrovich Begichev, the intendant of the Moscow Imperial Theatres, to write a ballet score. Tchaikovsky was not enthusiastic about the project at first, as he did not consider himself a particularly gifted ballet composer. However, he eventually warmed to the idea and threw himself into the work.

He based the score on a number of folk tunes, as well as some existing classical pieces. Interestingly, he originally intended for Swan Lake to be performed without any spoken dialogue – all of the action was to be conveyed through dance and music alone. However, Begichev insisted on adding a spoken libretto (script), and Tchaikovsky reluctantly complied.

The finished work was first performed at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in February 1877. It was not an immediate success – in fact, it was booed off stage! The audience didn’t appreciate Tchaikovsky’s innovative use of leitmotifs (recurring musical themes that represent characters or ideas) and found the story confusing.

Thankfully, Swan Lake went on to enjoy much greater success in subsequent years. It has become one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular works, and is now beloved by classical music fans all over the world.
