Born in Mount Olive, Butler County, Alabama, Williams relocated to Georgiana with his family in 1930. By the late 1930s, he had begun to gain popularity as a performer on Alabama radio stations with his own band, the Drifting Cowboys. His first hit record, “Move It on Over”, was released in 1940. In 1947 he dropped out of high school to devote himself full-time to country music.

In 1949 he had his first number one hit, “Lovesick Blues”, and in 1950 he married Audrey Sheppard. His biggest success came in 1951 with “Cold, Cold Heart” and “Hey, Good Lookin'”. He had his final Top Ten hit (posthumously) in 1954 with “I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive”.
