Early Life and Career

Andrew Lloyd Webber was born on March 22, 1948, in South Kensington, London, the son of William Lloyd Webber, a composer and royal organist, and Jean Hermione Johnstone, a violinist and pianist. Lloyd Webber’s younger brother, Julian, is also a successful musician and composer. From an early age Lloyd Webber displayed talent as a composer; his first composition was found among his father’s papers at the age of five. When he was nine years old he wrote a melody for which his brother Julian added lyrics about their pet cats. From 1959 to 1964 Lloyd Webber was educated at Westminster School in central London.

Lloyd Webber began his professional career while still a student at Oxford University. In 1965 he collaborated with fellow student Tim Rice on an 8-minute pop cantata called The Likes of Us.
