Dance and electronic music continue to dominate the charts on the Google Play Store, with a few new entries this week.

What’s new on the charts

Dance and electronic music have been leading the charge on the Play Store charts this week, with a number of new releases and older favorites making their way to the top.

One of the biggest movers this week is “I Believe,” a new track from Swedish duo Galantis. The track has already climbed to the No. 1 spot on the dance charts and is currently sitting at No. 3 on the overall songs chart.

Also making waves this week is “No,” a new single from French producer Madeon. The track has debuted at No. 1 on the dance charts and is currently sitting at No. 5 on the overall songs chart.

Other notable releases this week include Clean Bandit’s “Tears” (No. 2 on the dance charts), David Guetta’s “2U” (No. 4 on the dance charts), and Zedd’s “The Middle” (No. 6 on the dance charts).

How dance and electronic music topped the charts

Data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) shows that streaming now accounts for 80% of global record industry revenues.

Note that this doesn’t mean people are spending less on music overall—just that they’re buying it differently. In fact, IFPI’s data shows that global music revenues grew by 8.1% in 2018, the biggest annual increase since the organization began tracking them in 1997.

A big part of that growth is due to the popularity of streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. And within the world of streaming, one genre is proving to be especially popular: dance and electronic music.

In 2018, dance and electronic music was the most streamed genre in the world, accounting for more than a quarter of all streams (26.7%). That’s up from 22.4% in 2017 and just 12.8% in 2015.

What’s driving this growth? There are a few factors at play.

First, streaming services have made it easier than ever before to discover new music. If you’re a fan of dance and electronic music, you can easily find hundreds or even thousands of new artists to listen to with just a few clicks.

Second, many artistes who create this type of music are now using streaming platforms to reach a wider audience. In the past, if you wanted people to hear your music, you had to hope they would come across your songs on the radio or TV or stumble upon your CDs in a store. But now you can upload your tracks to Spotify or Apple Music and instantly have them available to millions of potential listeners around the world.

Finally, we’re seeing more and more artistes experiment with electronics as they look for new ways to create sound and innovate within their genre. This has led to some truly unique and exciting music being created in recent years, which has helped pique people’s interest in the genre as a whole.

What this means for the music industry

This news will likely come as no surprise to dedicated music fans, but it’s always good to have the data to back up our hunches. According to a new report from sensor tower,64 percent of the songs that were downloaded from the Google Play Store in the first quarter of 2019 were classified as “dance and electronic.” This genre has seen a steady rise in popularity over the past few years, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.

The report also found that 21 percent of all songs downloaded from the Play Store were classified as “hip-hop/rap,” which was the second most popular genre. This is a significant jump from last year when hip-hop/rap songs only made up 10 percent of all downloads. The rise of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music has likely contributed to this increase, as more people are exposed to a wider variety of music than ever before.

Interestingly, the report found that “rock” was the third most popular genre on the Play Store, with 9 percent of all downloads falling into this category. This is a significant decline from 2018 when rock songs made up 19 percent of all downloads. It’s possible that this decline is simply due to the fact that there are more options for music lovers now than there were in the past. With so much music available at our fingertips, it’s no wonder that people are branching out and exploring new genres.

Regardless of which genres are currently trending, one thing is clear: people love music, and they are willing to pay for it. The rise of streaming services has made it easier than ever for people to listen to their favorite songs, but it hasn’t stopped them from purchasing music outright. In fact, digital sales have been on the rise for years, and 2019 is shaping up to be another strong year for the industry.

What’s next for the charts

As we move into the new year, we are looking at the top music genres on the Google Play Store. In previous years, Pop and Hip-Hop/Rap topped the charts, but this year we see a new leader in Dance and Electronic music. This is a genre that has been steadily growing in popularity over the past few years, and it looks like it is here to stay.

So what does this mean for the future of the charts? It is safe to say that we will see more dance and electronic music topping the charts in the coming year. This is a genre that is popular with all age groups, so we expect to see it continue to grow in popularity.
