Heavy Metal

In 1970, Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi made heavier metal with some of the first ever horizontally-stretched power chords on their self-titled debut album. In 1971,United Kingdom’s Led Zeppelin also released their fourth album which is often considered one of the earliest examples of heavy metal. In 1973, Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan screamed during their song “Space Truckin” becoming one of the first vocalists to be associated with heavy metal. Sabbath guitarist Tommy Iommi stated in an interview with Guitar World that “You’ve got to have a certain amount of aggression to do it [heavy metal] … It’s all about letting go—that pent-up aggression coming out through the music.” Judas Priest’s Rob Halford explained in an interview with Billboard magazine why he thought that heavy metal was defined by its attitude instead of its sound: “People used to ask me what kind of music we played … I used tell them ‘If you went to bed worried about your wife or your job or whatever, when you wake up in a sweat because you had this terrible dream—that’s what our music is like.'”

In 1976, Queen released their fourth album A Night at the Opera which featured their classic song “Bohemian Rhapsody”, considered by many as one of the first examples of glam metal.Slade also released their seventh studio album Nobody’s Fools in 1976 which climbed to number four on United Kingdom charts. In 1977 AC/DC released their fifth studio album Let There Be Rock which was later certified 7x Platinum in 1984 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Also in 1977 Kiss released their fifth studio album Love Gun which was later certified 2x Platinum in 1985 by RIAA. In 1978 Van Halen released their self-titled debut album Van Halen which would become one of the best-selling albums of all time with over 10 million copies sold in the United States alone. Also in 1978 Rainbow release their fourth studio album Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll which peaked at number six on United Kingdom charts. In 1979 Quiet Riot release their debut album Quiet Riot which would become one of the bestselling debut albums ever with over 6 million copies sold worldwide.

Megadeth

Originating from Los Angeles, California, Megadeth is a heavy metal band that was formed in 1983. The band is composed of founder, lead vocalist and guitarist Dave Mustaine, bassist David Ellefson, guitarist Kiko Loureiro and drummer Dirk Verbeuren. Megadeth is known for their distinctive thrash metal sound as well as their complex musicianship. Overall, the band has released fifteen studio albums, five live albums, six compilation albums and thirty-six singles. They have also received eight Grammy Award nominations, winning one in the Best Metal Performance category for the song “The Conjuring” in 1992.

Pantera

Originating from Arlington, Texas in 1981, Pantera was a metal band that composed of four members: brothers Vinnie Paul Abbott (drums) and Dimebag Darrell Lance Abbott (guitars), Terry Glaze (guitars), and Rex Brown (bass). With their heavy and aggressive sound, they became one of the most successful metal bands in history. They released nine studio albums, with their last four albums – “Cowboys from Hell” (1990), “Vulgar Display of Power” (1992), “Far Beyond Driven” (1994), and “The Great Southern Trendkill” (1996) – considered as their best work. The band broke up in 2003 after Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed onstage during a show.

Slayer

Slayer is an American metal band that was formed in 1981. The band’s music is characterized by fast tempos, aggressive musicianship, and lyrical themes of death, violence, and warfare. Slayer’s musical styleurgently complex, and often incorporates elements of thrash metal, punk rock, and hardcore punk. They are credited as one of the “big four” thrash metal bands, along with Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax; they were also instrumental in promoting the development of Death Metal and black metal. The band has released 12 studio albums; two live albums; one compilation album; one box set; four video albums; 31 singles; nine extended plays (EPs); and a number of other products. Slayer has sold 5 million records in the United States.

Slayer’s 1986 album Reign in Blood helped define what death metal would become. It was ranked #294 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003, having been ranked at #279 the previous year. In 2009 it was named the greatest metal album of all time by Kerrang!. In 2004, Reign in Blood was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for being “culturally or historically significant.” Several songs from Reign in Blood have been added to Slayer’s live set-list since its debut including “Raining Blood”, “War Ensemble”, “South of Heaven”, “Mandatory Suicide” and “Seasons in the Abyss”.

Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. The initial lineup was rounded out by drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr, who was replaced in 1993 by Mike Inez. Despite stigma due to their association with the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Alice in Chains gained mainstream success with their second album, Dirt (1992), which was certified quadruple-platinum and has sold 5 million copies in the United States to date. The band released their follow-up album, Jar of Flies (1994), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum in just two weeks.
