Def Leppard was one of the most successful bands of the 1980s. They were known for their high-pitched vocals, catchy hooks, and glam metal image.

Def Leppard’s Beginnings

Def Leppard is a British rock band that formed in 1977 in Sheffield, England. The band was initially made up of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, drummer Tony Kenning, and lead guitarist Pete Willis. The band’s first album, On Through the Night, was released in March 1980 and reached number 15 on the UK Albums Chart.

The band’s formation

In late 1978, 16-year-old Pete Willis was playing guitar in a band called Atomic Mass. They had just finished a gig when Rick Allen, who was also 16 at the time, approached Pete and asked if he could audition to be the band’s drummer. Willis liked Allen’s playing and agreed to let him try out.

During Allen’s audition, the rest of the band was fooling around on stage and one of them knocked over a mic stand, which hit Allen’s left arm and caused him to lose his grip on his stick. The force of the impact broke Allen’s arm in three places.

Despite this accident, Willis was so impressed with Allen’s playing that he agreed to let him join the band. With their new drummer in place, they changed their name to Def Leppard and started gigging around clubs in England.
