Introduction to Disney Jazz

Disney Jazz is a genre of music that encompasses the soundtracks and songs of Disney movies and television shows that feature jazz elements. It is sometimes also referred to as “jazzy Disney” or “Disneyfied jazz”.

The history of Disney Jazz can be traced back to the early days of Walt Disney’s animation studio, when he hired musician Paul Whiteman and his orchestra to play for the opening of the first ever Disney animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). While Whiteman and his orchestra were not playing jazz music per se, their performances did incorporate some elements of jazz. This would set the stage for future Disney productions that would feature more prominently featured jazz music.

Some notable examples of Disney Jazz include songs like “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast (1991), “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin (1992), “When We’re Human” from The Princess and the Frog (2009), and “Let It Go” from Frozen (2013).

While Disney Jazz is not its own distinct genre, it is a unique style of music that has been enjoyed by fans for many years.

The Future of Disney Jazz

As one of the most popular and well-known entertainment companies in the world, Disney has a long history of giving back to the music industry. One way they have done this is through their support of jazz music. For decades, Disney has been associated with some of the greatest names in jazz, and they have helped to promote the genre through their films, TV shows, and theme parks. In recent years, however, Disney has seemed to move away from jazz, instead focusing on pop and EDM. This has led many to wonder if Disney is still committed to supporting the genre.

Frozen won two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Let It Go”), the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film, five Annie Awards (including Best Animated Feature), two Grammy Awards for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media and Best Song Written for Visual Media (“Let It Go”), and two Critics’ Choice Movie Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Let It Go”).

Moana

Jazz at its best is innovative, experimental, and always evolving. Much like the ocean, it is ever-changing and impossible to pin down. This makes it the perfect soundtrack for Moana, Disney’s latest animated feature set in the South Pacific.

The film’s directors, Ron Clements and John Musker, are no strangers to jazz – or to Disney. The team behind The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules also introduced Disney audiences to Tiana, the first African-American princess, in 2009’s The Princess and the Frog. For Moana, they’ve assembled an all-star team of jazz musicians to bring the film’s music to life.

One of the most exciting aspects of Moana is its focus on Polynesian culture and music.Researching traditional music from Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, and other island nations was a crucial part of developing the film’s unique sound. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the film’s songs with Opetaia Foa‘i and Mark Mancina, drew inspiration from these traditional styles to create something entirely new.

The result is a score that is steeped in jazz tradition while also feeling fresh and modern. Moana features some of Disney’s most beautiful melodies, sung by a diverse cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Auliʻi Cravalho, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jemaine Clement. With stunning visuals and a gorgeous soundtrack, Moana is sure to be one of Disney’s most memorable films – and one of its best examples of Jazz at its finest.

Coco

One of the latest examples of Disney’s jazz legacy is found in the 2017 Pixar film “Coco.” The film tells the story of a young Mexican boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming a musician, despite his family’s generations-old ban on music. Miguel finds himself in the Land of the Dead, where he meets his deceased musician great-great-grandfather and learns about his family’s history. “Coco” features an original score by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, as well as several traditional Mexican songs performed by a mariachi band.
