Location

Rutgers University is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey, which is about an hour drive from both New York City and Philadelphia. History

Rutgers was founded in 1766 as a private university in Newark, New Jersey. It is the 8th oldest college in the United States and was originally chartered as Queen’s College. The school was renamed Rutgers College in 1825 in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers, who donated $5000 to the school. Rutgers became a land-grant university in 1864 and joined the Association of American Universities in 1934.
