Introduction

Blending elements of traditional dubstep with heavy bass and a wide range of electronic music, dubstep has become one of the most popular genres in recent years. With its infectious beats and melody, dubstep has continued to grow in popularity, both in the clubs and on the radio.

There are a wide variety of dubstep artists, each with their own unique style. Here are some of the best dubstep and electro artists that you should check out.

What is Dubstep?

Dubstep is a music genre that emerged in the early 2000s from the UK garage scene. It is characterized by its heavy basslines, dark atmosphere, and often aggressive or foreboding lyrics.

The Origins of Dubstep

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with prominent sub-bass frequencies. The style emerged as an offshoot of UK garage, drawing on a lineage of related styles such as 2-step and dub reggae.

In the early 2000s, dubstep began to emerge as a distinct genre, gaining popularity with both DJs and audiences in nightclubs. By the mid-2000s, a number of production artists were working in the style and had begun to release music on a number of small independent record labels. In 2007, dubstep artist Skream’s track “Midnight Request Line” paved the way for commercial success, becoming one of the first dubstep tracks to achieve mainstream appeal.

In recent years, dubstep has become increasingly popular, thanks in part to its inclusion in popular culture (such as television and film) and its association with artists such as Skrillex and Calvin Harris. The genre has also been embraced by the rock and pop worlds, with everyone from Muse to Lady Gaga incorporating elements of dubstep into their music.

The Sound of Dubstep

The central characteristic of dubstep is the two-step beat, which consists of a heavy bass drum on the 1st and 3rd beats (accented sub-bass), with a snare or clap on the 2nd and 4th beats. This breakbeat-oriented style was inspired by Jamaican dub and British garage music of the 1990s. There are often one or more “drops” in which all sound, except for the pulse-like bass, is muted for several seconds (bar) while only sub-bass remains. This momentary lack of rhythmic structure creates an ominous feeling of suspense that is central to much dubstep.

What is Electro?

Electro is a style of electronic music that emerged in the early 1980s. It is characterized by a heavy use of synthesizers, drum machines, and vocoders. Electro music is often upbeat and often features distorted basslines.

The Origins of Electro

The term “electro” is derived from the electronic music that first emerged in the late 1970s. This type of music was created using electronic instruments and synthesizers, and it was often used in disco and dance clubs. In the early 1980s, electro began to develop into a more distinct genre, with its own distinctive sound and style.

Electro music is typically characterized by heavy basslines, aggressively rhythmic beats, and often distorted or manipulated vocals. It can be either fast or slow, but it is always energetic and powerful. Electro is often produced using samples from other songs or sounds, which gives it a unique sound that can be quite addictive.
