What is dubstep?

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with bass lines that contain prominent sub-bass frequencies. The style emerged as an offshoot of UK garage, drawing on a lineage of related styles such as 2-step and dub reggae.

The history of dubstep

The first dubstep tracks began to appear on UK garage soundsystems in the late 1990s, primarily featuring 2-step rhythms and dark, half-speed basslines. These early tracks were often experimental and not well received by audiences (unlike the relatively more pop-oriented 2-step garage music that was also being played at the time). Nevertheless, a number of producers persisted with the style and began to develop a more distinct sound.

In 2002, a track called “Slow Jam” by El-B (a.k.a. Lemon D) started to gain popularity on underground dubstep nights in London; it is widely considered to be the first true dubstep track. Around the same time, another key figure in the early days of dubstep was producer/DJ Youngsta (a.k.a. Mistajam), who was instrumental in helping to grow the popularity of the genre through his DJ sets and radio show on London’s Kiss FM.

In 2005, dubstep finally broke into the mainstream with two key releases: Kode9’s “Sine of the Dub” (featuring Spaceape) and Skream’s “Midnight Request Line”. These tracks, along with others from artists such as Burial and Geoffrey Laurence (a.k.a. Distance), helped to establish dubstep’s signature sound: dark, atmospheric production featuring sub-bass frequencies, minimal 2-step rhythms, and sparse melodies or samples.

Since then, dubstep has continued to evolve and splinter off into subgenres such as wonky, brostep, future garage, and post-dubstep; meanwhile, its influence can be heard in a wide range of other genres including trap, EDM, pop, and hip-hop. As we head into 2022, there are still plenty of exciting dubstep festivals taking place around the world; here are 10 that you won’t want to miss!
