James Cleveland

One of the most popular and influential gospel artists of all time, James Cleveland was a singer, songwriter, and arranger who played an important role in the development of contemporary gospel music. Cleveland was born in Chicago in 1931 and began his musical career singing with the junior Choir of the West Side Church of God in Christ. He went on to study music at Warner Bros. Academy of Dramatic Arts and West Virginia State College, and he honed his skills as a choral arranger and conductor working with various gospel groups in the 1950s.

In 1961, Cleveland founded the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA), which brought together some of the most talented gospel musicians from around the country. The GMWA became one of the most important institutions in the development of contemporary gospel music, encouraging the use of modern musical styles and techniques while maintaining a strong connection to traditional gospel roots.

Cleveland continued to record and perform throughout his career, and he appeared on some of the most important recordings in gospel music history, including Mahalia Jackson’s “The Great Gospel Songs” (1956) and Aretha Franklin’s “Amazing Grace” (1972). He also worked as a producer for several artists, including Andraé Crouch and Walter Hawkins. James Cleveland died in 1991, but his legacy continues to be heard in the work of many contemporary gospel artists.
