Since their formation, El Gusano has been hailed as one of the most promising bands to come out of Mexico in recent years. In 2016, the band was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

History

El Gusano was founded in 2007 by brothers Gabriel and Emiliano Falcón in Mexico City. The band’s name comes from a Mexican folk tale about a worm that turns into a butterfly. They began as a three-piece with friends Antonio Bernal on drums and Javier Robles on bass.

Formation

El Gusano was formed in 2007 by friends who had all grown up together in Tepoztlán, Morelos, Mexico. The band members are: Luis Alfredo (vocals, guitar), Julio Venegas ( lead guitar), Alan Aguilar (bass), and Edgar Olvera (drums). They began playing shows around town and quickly gained a following.

In 2009, they released their first album, “Los Hijos del Maíz”. The album was met with critical acclaim and cemented their place as one of the leading bands in the Mexican psychedlic rock scene.

They have since released two more albums, “El Nuevo Orden Mundial” (2012) and “Dos Mil Uno” (2017), and continue to tour throughout Mexico and the United States.

musical style

Instrumentally, El Gusano is a psychedelic rock band. The guitars are fuzzy and heavily distorted, giving the music a dense and “heavy” sound. The drums are often tribal-sounding, with lots of tom-tom work. The basslines are thick and groovy. And the keyboards add a swirling, spacey texture to the music. All of these elements come together to create a sound that is both powerful and psychedelic.

Vocally, El Gusano is a bit more subdued. The lead singer (Ariel Camacho) has a gentle, smooth voice that floats over the top of the music. He doesn’t try to overpower the instruments; instead, he lets his voice blend in with the overall sound of the band. This creates a laid-back feel that is both calming and hypnotic.
