What is Electronic Dance Music?

Electronic Dance Music, also known as EDM, is a type of music that is often played at nightclubs and festivals. It is typically produced by DJs and producers using electronic instruments and tools. EDM can encompass a wide range of subgenres, such as House, Techno, Trance, Drum & Bass and more.

The Different Types of Electronic Dance Music

Electronic dance music comes in many different forms. The most popular genres are techno, trance, and house. However, there are many other genres that are starting to become popular as well. This section will cover the different types of electronic dance music and their subgenres.

House

In the broadest sense, house music is a style of popular music often played in nightclubs, bars, and discothèques. It has been influenced by genres such as funk, soul, disco, hip hop, and rock. House music is created by DJs, producers, and artists who often use sampling to create tracks. The style originated in Chicago in the early 1980s.

The first use of the term “house music” is thought to be on a record called “Party House” by DJ Pierre. House music quickly spread to other parts of the United States, and then to the rest of the world. House music became popular in Europe in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In the United Kingdom, house music was often called “acid house” due to its similarity to psychedelic trance or Goa trance.

Today, house music is still very popular in nightclubs and on dance floors around the world.

Techno

Techno is a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan in the United States in the mid-to-late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno in reference to a specific genre of music was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built.

Techno is generally characterized by a strong 4/4 beat, repetitive basslines, and synthesizers. The music is often created with software instruments, and is often associated with futurism and science fiction.

Dubstep

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London, England. It is characterized by a sparse, syncopated rhythm with deep bass lines and occasional vocal samples. The style emerged in the early 2000s and became popular in the 2010s.

The word “dubstep” is often used to describe a range of Bass-heavy music, with the term entering common usage in 2009. The genre was pioneered by producers such as Skream, Benga and Burial, who were influenced by dub, 2-step garage and dark garage. The style has been used in films and video games, and has been featured in various genres of music including hip hop, grime and Drum and Bass.

Drum and Bass

With its breakneck tempos and punishing basslines, drum and bass became the most adrenalin-fueled electronic music in the world when it first reached mainstream consciousness in the mid-1990s. Also known as jungle, the style was created by UK producers who had been influenced by reggae sound system culture, hip-hop, and particularly the breakbeat tracks that were beginning to appear on US house and techno compilations. The dancefloor impact of early jungle tracks like ”Bad Company” by rave crew Bad Company and ”Raving I’m Raving” byShut Up and Dance was immediate, and soon a whole new underground movement was born.

Trance

Trance is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged from the British new-age music scene and the early 1990s German techno and hardcore scenes. At its simplest, trance is characterized by a tempo lying between 110–150 bpm, consisting of repetitive synthesizer melodies, and a musical form that progresses through 2 phases: an uplifting build-up with a progressive climax leading to a breakdown followed by a return to the main melody.
