What is Techno?

Techno is a type of electronic dance music that originated in Detroit, Michigan in the 1980s. The genre is characterized by a repetitive 4/4 beat, often with synthesized basslines and drum machines. Early techno was influenced by early electronic music such as Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder and Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Techno first emerged in the underground rave and club scene in Detroit in the early 1980s. Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, known as the Belleville Three, are often credited with being the pioneers of techno. In 1988, Atkins founded the label Metroplex with May and Saunderson. The label’s first release was “Do It (’til You’re Satisfied)” by BWB featuring Atkins on vocals. The track became a club hit in Detroit and Chicago. In the same year, Atkins also produced “Strings of Life” under his pseudonym Model 500, which was also a huge club hit.

The popularity of techno spread to Europe in the late 1980s and early 1990s. European techno artists such as Jean Michel Jarre, Front 242 and Aphex Twin were influence by Detroit techno but added their own unique flavoring to the genre. They also had success with their 2013 album, Random Access Memories, which won five Grammy Awards.

Underworld

Underworld is a British electronic music group formed in 1980 by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. They promoted themselves as “the real underground music” of the time. Hyde and Smith originated the musical style that would later become known as acid house. The group’s 1992 single ” Rez/Cowgirl” is credited with being instrumental in the development of techno, particularly their use of a Roland TB-303 bass line synthesizer. It peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and number 22 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in the United States.
