Introduction

In a year defined by a global pandemic, social unrest, and widespread uncertainty, many of us found solace in music. Electronic music, in particular, was a source of comfort and inspiration for many, with its ability to transport us to different worlds and help us escape the reality of our day-to-day lives.

As we look back on 2020, it’s clear that electronic music had a major impact on the world. From the success of massive hits like Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” and Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” to the popularity of dancefloor anthems like The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and Lady Gaga’s “Stupid Love,” it’s clear that electronic music was one of the defining genres of the year.

And while there were many incredible electronic artists who made an impact in 2020, there are a handful that stand out above the rest. These are the artists who not only had huge hits this year, but who also pushed the boundaries of the genre and redefined what it means to be an electronic musician in 2020.

Madeon

Madeon is a French electronic music producer, DJ, and songwriter. His first major release,Adventure, was released in 2015 to critical acclaim. Madeon has since released a number of singles and EPs, including “All My Friends”, “Shelter”, and “Pay No Mind”. He has also collaborated with a number of artists, including Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Passion Pit, and Mark Ronson.

Porter Robinson

Porter Robinson is an American DJ, producer and musician from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is best known for his hit singles “Say My Name” and “Language”. Porter Robinson began his career in 2008, when he was only 18 years old. He first gained popularity with his remix of the track “Holds Me Back”, which was released on thelabel Skrillex’s OWSLA imprint. In 2012, Porter Robinson released his debut studio album, Worlds. The album received critical acclaim and was ranked as one of the best albums of the year by several publications. Porter Robinson has since released several more singles and remixes, and has performed at festivals such as Coachella, Tomorrowland and Ultra Music Festival.

Illenium

Praised for his creative songwriting and haunting melodies, Illenium (real name Nick Miller) is a Colorado-based producer who rose to prominence with his 2016 debut album, Ashes. Blending elements of bass music, melodic dubstep, and trance, Illenium’s emotionally charged music has resonated with fans around the world, leading to collaborations with the likes of Excision, Chronicles of the Dead, and Annika Wells. In 2020, he released his third studio album, Awake 2.0, which featured guest appearances from Jon Bellion, Call Me Karizma, and Said the Sky.

Seven Lions

Jeff Montalvo, better known by his stage name Seven Lions, is an American record producer, remixer and DJ from Santa Barbara, California. Dating back to his first release in 2011, “Days to Come”, Seven Lions has become one of the most prolific trance producers of the past decade. His singles “Strangers”, “Island”, and “Rush Over Me” have all been mainstays on Beatport’s trance charts, while his remixes for Linkin Park, Above & Beyond and Korn have catapulted him into the mainstream spotlight. In 2014, he founded the record label Ophelia with fellow producers Jason Ross and A&R support from Arty. In 2019, he released his sophomore album “See Further”.

San Holo

San Holo is a Dutch DJ, musician, record producer and composer. Holo is best known for his song “Light”, which was released in 2014 and has been certified gold in the United States. His debut studio album, album1, was released in 2018.

San Holo’s musical style has been described as “future bass”, “trap”, “chillwave” and “melodic dubstep”. He was influenced by artists such as James Blake, Bonobo, M83, Deftones and The Naked and Famous.

Rezz

Rezz,born Isabelle Rezazadeh, is a Canadian DJ and producer. She first gained popularity in 2015 with her debut EP “Insurrection”. Rezz has released two studio albums, “Mass Manipulation” (2017) and “Certain Kind of Magic” (2018), and collaborated with Skrillex on the song ” ID “. Rezz has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, winning one for Best Remix Performance in 2019.

Gryffin

Gryffin is an American musician, DJ, and record producer. His debut single, “Heading Home”, featuring Josef Salvat, was released in 2015. He has since released several singles, including “Feel Good” featuring Daya, which peaked at number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Louis the Child

Louis the Child is an American electronic music duo from Chicago, Illinois, consisting of Freddy Kennett and Robby Hauldren. The duo is best known for their singles “It’s Strange,” “Weekend,” and “Fire.”

Alison Wonderland

Real name Alexandra Sholler, Alison Wonderland is an Australian producer who got her start as a classically trained cellist. As a teenager, she pursued a career in DJing and soon found herself performing at major music festivals like Coachella, EDC Las Vegas, and Lollapalooza. Alison’s debut album Run was released in 2015 to critical acclaim, and she followed it up with the release of Awake in 2018.
