The pair first met each other in 1987 while studying at the University of Manchester. They began working together on various house and techno tracks, Rowlands producing under the name “Asbestos” and Simons under the name “DJ Swirl”. In 1991 they released their first track “Song to Sing”, which was included on an compilation album called Totally Natural Vol 1. The following year they released “Leave Home”, which staple of their early live sets and was later included on their 1995 debut album Exit Planet Dust.

DJhas been romantically linked to Lily Allen and Alexa Chung), who worked A&R for BEF’s record label Deconstruction Records; Swanston liked what he heard and arranged for the duo to meet with BEF producer Alex Paterson (a.k.a. The Orb). Paterson immediately signed them to his imprint Freestyle Dust, and released their first single “What Evil Lurks” in 1992.
