Introduction

EDM, or electronic dance music, is a popular genre of music that is typically characterized by a strong beat and repetitive melodies. EDM is often produced with electronic instruments and can be found in clubs, festivals, and concerts.

What is EDM?

EDM is a genre of electronic music that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The term is typically used to refer to music that combines elements of house, techno, dubstep, and trance.

EDM is characterized by its use of synthesizers, drum machines, and vocoders. It is often produced for use in live performances, DJ sets, and festivals. EDM festivals are typically large-scale events that feature multiple stages with different DJs and genres of electronic music.

The popularity of EDM has grown exponentially in recent years, with the genre now commanding a global audience. EDM artists have achieved mainstream success and are regularly featured on top 40 radio stations and in major music festivals around the world.

The History of EDM

The history of electronic dance music is often traced back to the early 1970s, when pioneering artists like Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder created groundbreaking electronic music. However, the genre truly came into its own in the 1980s, when new wave, synth-pop and electro artists began to experiment with electronic production techniques. This experimentation led to the birth of house music in the mid-1980s, a genre that would go on to dominate club culture for the next two decades. In the 1990s and 2000s, techno and trance artists pushed the boundaries of electronic music, while also spawning subgenres like drum & bass and dubstep. Today, EDM is one of the most popular genres in the world, with acts like Calvin Harris and Avicii topping charts around the globe.

The Different Genres of EDM

There are many different types of electronic dance music (EDM) out there. The two most popular genres are probably dubstep and techno. But there are also other genres such as trance, house, and Drum & Bass. In this article, we will take a look at the different genres of EDM and what sets them apart.

House

Production-wise, house music is often characterized by a prominent, driving bassline. The drumbeat is typically four-on-the-floor (emphasis on beats two and four) with syncopated hi-hatcymbals on the off-beats. The tempo is generally around 120 to 130 beats per minute (bpm).

House music often relies heavily on synthesizers, drum machines, and deep basslines. It can be acid house, which features distorted and modulated synthesizer sounds. Chicago house often incorporates elements of soul music, while Detroit techno features synthesizers in a high register and emphasizes mechanically driven rhythms.

Techno

Techno is a genre of electronic music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan in the United States during the mid-to-late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno, in reference to a genre of music, was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built.

Techno is generally repetitive instrumental music produced for use in a continuous DJ set. The central rhythmic component is most often in common time (4/4), where time is marked by thebeat. Auxiliary rhythms such as claps, snare rolls, and hi-hat cymbals are often inserted between the beat markers. In live sets, drum machines are often muted or played along with recorded sequences.

The Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer and TR-808 drum machine were influential in the development of acid house and techno. The TB-303 produces a distinctive squelching sound which influenced acid house and techno producers who would often use pitch manipulation and distortion to create effects similar to that of the TB-303.

Trance

Trance is a genre of electronic music that emerged in the early 1990s. It is characterized by a tempo of between 130 and 160 BPM, repeating melodic phrases and a musical form that builds up and breaks down throughout a track.

The genre developed in Germany and the UK, and was further popularized in the late 1990s by artists such as Paul van Dyk, Tiësto, Sasha, and Ferry Corsten. In the 2000s, trance music experienced a surge in popularity, with various subgenres such as progressive trance, uplifting trance, psytrance, tech trance, and vocal trance becoming widely successful.

Today, trance music remains one of the most popular genres of electronic music, with festivals such as Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowland attracting hundreds of thousands of attendees each year.

Drum and Bass

Drum and bass is a genre of electronic music that originated in the United Kingdom in the early 1990s. It is characterized by fast breakbeats (typically between 150 and 200 beats per minute) with heavy bass and sub-bass lines. Drum and bass grew out of the rave and jungle scenes of the 1980s.

The genre was initially known as jungle, but as it developed, it came to be known as drum and bass. It is often used as a synonym for jungle, but there are significant differences between the two genres. Drum and bass tends to be more experimental, with more emphasis on sound design and atmosphere, while jungle is more focused on danceability and party vibes.

There are many subgenres of drum and bass, including techstep, neurofunk, rollers, darkstep, jump up, and liquid funk. The genre has also been influence by other genres such as dubstep, grime, house, and techno.

Dubstep

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with little or no melody, and often featuresappealing bass-lines.

The style emerged as an offshoot of UK garage, drawing on a lineage of related styles such as 2-step and dub reggae. The earliest dubstep releases date back to 1998, and the genre started to achieve mainstream popularity in the UK in the early 2000s.

In the mid-2000s, dubstep began to emerge in North America and Australia. By the 2010s, the style had been adoption by a wide range of popular musicians such as Skrillex and Rihanna.
