Band History

The Band was a Canadian-American rock group, formed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1967. The Band’s original line-up consisted of Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, vocals), Levon Helm (drums, vocals, mandolin), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophones, trumpet), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals). The Band’s primary songwriter was Robbie Robertson.

The Band underwent multiple personnel changes throughout its existence: Danko died in 1999; Manuel committed suicide in 1986; and Hudson retired from performing in 1999 but remained a member until his death in 2016. After the group’s 1976 farewell concert featuring their final original configuration—Danko on bass guitar and lead vocals; Helm on drums and lead vocals; Hudson on keyboards; Robertson on guitar and backing vocals; plus jazz horns and female backing vocalists—the surviving members attempted to carry on without Robertson. They recruited Jim Weider (guitar) and Randy Ciarlante (drums) to replace Manuel and Helm respectively. The lineup continued until 1996 when Ciarlante amicably departed the group to focus full-time on his family. In 1999 the remaining members—Robertson now retired from touring himself due to health problems—brought aboard RANDY STERN as their drummer for a more extensive tour schedule which ran through 2001. Jim Weider continued leading The Band through the present day with JOSHUA FRANKEL as his drummer since 2014.

The current members are MAGGIE MOGINIE (guitars), RICHARD BELL (keyboards), RANDY STERN (drums), JIM WEIDER (guitars) and JOSHUA FRANKEL(drums).
