The Birth of Hip Hop

The first Hip Hop record is widely considered to be “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang, released in 1979. Hip hop music has evolved considerably since then, but its roots are in the African American community, particularly in the Bronx borough of New York City.

DJ Kool Herc

DJ Kool Herc is one of the most important figures in the history of hip hop music. He is credited with inventing the break beat, which is the foundation of all hip hop music. DJ Kool Herc was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1955. His family moved to New York City when he was a child, and he grew up in the Bronx.

Kool Herc began his DJ career at block parties in the Bronx in the early 1970s. He quickly became popular for his innovative style of mixing records, which included lengthening the breaks between the drums and basslines of funk records. This gave partygoers more time to dance, and it soon caught on with other DJs. Kool Herc’s style of DJing was an important influence on future hip hop legends such as Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash.

Afrika Bambaataa

Afrika Bambaataa is a renowned hip hop DJ and producer who is credited with helping to pioneer the genre. He was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1957, and his love of music began at an early age. He would often go to block parties and dance battles, which is where he first began to spin records. In the 1970s, he became a member of the Black Spades, a notorious street gang. However, he later turned his back on violence and embraced the hip hop lifestyle. He founded the Zulu Nation, which was a movement that promoted peace and unity within the hip hop community.

The Golden Age of Hip Hop

The golden age of hip hop is a term often used to describe the period between the mid-1980s and the early 1990s. This was a time when hip hop music was first developed and established itself as a distinct genre. Many of the genre’s most iconic and influential artists emerged during this time, including Public Enemy, N.W.A., and Run-D.M.C.

Run DMC

Formed in 1981 in Hollis, Queens, New York, hip hop trio Run-D.M.C. is widely considered to be one of the most influential groups in the history of rap music. They helped to popularize hip hop with mainstream audiences and are credited with making it a legitimate musical genre. The group members were rapper/vocalist Darryl “DMC” McDaniel, rapper Joseph “Run” Simmons, and DJ/producer Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell.

Run DMC is best known for their 1984 song “Rock Box,” which was the first rap song to be played on MTV, and their 1986 collaboration with Aerosmith on a reworked version of the rock band’s classic song “Walk This Way.” Other well-known songs by the group include “It’s Tricky,” “Peter Piper,” and “My Adidas.”

The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, and they continue to be held up as an example of the powerful influence that hip hop can have on both music and culture.

Public Enemy

Now considered one of the most influential and groundbreaking groups in hip hop history, Public Enemy began their musical journey in the early 1980s. Hailing from Long Island, New York, the group is made up of Chuck D ( Carlton Ridenhour) and Flavor Flav (William Drayton Jr.), who are joined by DJ Lord (Richard Griffin), The S1W Group (Security of the First World), Professor Griff (Richard Griffin), and Khari Wynn. Although they have gone through several lineup changes over the years, this core group has remained together since their formation in 1985.

Public Enemy’s music is a potent mix of political activism and social commentary, with a heavy dose of humor thrown in for good measure. Their debut album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, was released in 1987 to critical acclaim, but it was their second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, that really put them on the map. Featuring the hit singles “Don’t Believe the Hype” and “Fight the Power,” It Takes a Nation of Millions is widely considered to be one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made.

Public Enemy’s influence can still be felt today, as they continue to release new music and tour regularly. If you’re a fan of hip hop, or just looking for something different, do yourself a favor and check out Public Enemy.

N.W.A.

N.W.A. was an American hip hop group from Compton, California, who were among the earliest and most significant popularizers and controversial figures of the gangsta rap subgenre, sometimes credited with helping to pioneer it. The group’s line-up originally consisted of Arabian Prince, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube. Member Dre would later leave the group in 1991 under controversial circumstances to form his own label Death Row Records with Suge Knight; Eazy-E would also leave the group later that year due to financial disagreements with Jerry Heller related to ownership stakes in Ruthless Records; Arabian Prince departed shortly afterwards due to creative disagreements with the remaining members; leaving MC Ren and DJ Yella as the only constant members of the group from 1985 until its dissolution in 1991
N.W.A’s debut studio album Straight Outta Compton was released on August 8, 1988 by Ruthless Records, a subsidiary of Rhyme Syndicate Entertainment and distributed by Priority Records. Eight tracks from executive producer Dr. Dre were composed by engineer/producer Bill Stephenson of Audio Achievements in North Hollywood, who had formerly worked with Parliament-Funkadelic during their “One Nation Under a Groove Tour”, including contributing as one of five keyboairst/synthesists during their performance at The Beverly Theater on July 16, 1978 for which George Clinton was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance
All tracks on Straight Outta Compton were mixed and engineered by Michael Oliver at Audio Achievements in North Hollywood
