The Opera House is the home of an annual opera performance, “Aria di Mezzo Carattere”. The opera is a love story about a human woman and an ESPer man. The woman, Maria, is played by Celes Chere, and the man, Setzer Gabbiani, is played by Locke Cole.

The night of the opera, Locke sneaks into the dressing room to meet with Celes. He tells her that he has been hired by Setzer to kidnap her so that he can make her his bride. Locke offers to help Celes escape, but she refuses, saying that she wants to see the opera through to the end.

The next day, Setzer arrives at the Opera House in his airship, the Blackjack. He confronts Locke and Celes on the stage, and demands that Celes come with him. She refuses, and Setzer Kidnaps her anyway. Locke goes after them in the airship, but is shot down by Setzer’s henchmen.

As Locke lies wounded on the ground, Celes comes back for him. She has decided to go with Setzer after all, because she loves him. She tells Locke that he was always her true friend, and gives him a kiss goodbye before she leaves with Setzer.
