In a world of autotuned anthems and mainstream hits, sometimes it’s nice to strip down to the basics and listen to something real. This year, there has been a resurgence in folk music, and these 5 artists are leading the pack.

Passenger

British folk singer-songwriter Passenger is one to look out for in 2017. After the release of his latest album, Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea, he embarked on a 115-date world tour. His music has been featured in TV shows and movies such as Grey’s Anatomy and The Host.

The Paper Kites

The Paper Kites are an Australian indie folk band that formed in Melbourne in 2010. The band consists of Sam Bentley, Christina Lacy, David Powys, Josh Bentley, and Sam Knight. The band’s sound has been compared to that of Fleet Foxes and Simon & Garfunkel. The Paper Kites have released three studio albums, States (2011), twelvefour (2014), and On the Train Ride Home (2017).

The band’s first album, States, was released in 2011 and reached number 8 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album includes the singles “Bloom”, “Featherstone”, and “Don’t Keep Driving”.

The band’s second album, twelvefour, was released in 2014 and reached number 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album includes the singles “Electric Indigo”, “Young”, and “Stolen Dance”.

The band’s third album, On the Train Ride Home, was released in 2017 and reached number 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album includes the singles “As LONG as YOU LOVE Me”, WORLD”, and “DRIVE”.

The Staves

The Staves are an English folk rock trio from Watford, Hertfordshire. The band consists of sisters Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor. The band’s debut album, Dead & Born & Grown, was released in 2012 to critical acclaim. The follow-up album, If I Was, was released in 2015.

The sisters grew up surrounded by music; their father was a folk singer and their mother a music teacher. Emily and Jessica began writing songs together when they were teenagers. They self-released an EP in 2009 before signing with Atlantic Records in 2011. The band has toured extensively, both as headliners and supporting other artists such as Ben Howard, Mumford & Sons, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats.

The Staves are known for their close harmonies and intricate songwriting. Their style has been compared to that of Fleetwood Mac and Simon & Garfunkel.

The band is currently working on their third studio album, which is due for release in 2017.

Hozier

Irish singer-songwriter Hozier is known for his soulful voice and bluesy, guitar-driven sound. His breakout hit “Take Me to Church” earned him worldwide recognition, and he has since released a self-titled debut album and an EP, “From Eden.” Hozier’s music often deals with social and political issues, making him a powerful and thought-provoking artist to watch.

Mumford and Sons

Mumford and Sons is a band that formed in 2007 in England. The band consists of members Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall, and Ted Dwane. The band is known for their use of acoustic instruments and their unique blend of folk, rock, and blues music. Mumford and Sons has released three studio albums, Sigh No More (2009), Babel (2012), and Wilder Mind (2015). The band has won several awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Album of the Year for Babel in 2013.
