We take a look at some of the best folk music bands of 2013. These are the groups that have been impressing us with their music and we think you should check them out too.

The band is made up of two brothers, Scott Avett and Seth Avett, who are the lead singers and songwriters. The Avett Brothers have released seven studio albums, four live albums, and one extended play. Their music has been described as “a mix of bluegrass, country, punk, pop, rock, and indie folk.”

The band first gained popularity in North Carolina before moving to Charleston, South Carolina, where they released their debut album, Country Was (2002). This was followed by a self-titled album in 2003 and Mignonette in 2004. In 2005, the Avett Brothers co-founded Ramseur Records with Dolph Ramseur. In 2006, they released Four Thieves Gone: The robinsville sessions which catapulted them to national attention.

The Avett Brothers’ major label debut album I and Love and You (2009) peaked at number 16 on the Billboard 200 chart. Their fifth studio album The Carpenter (2012) reached number 4 on the same chart. Critical acclaim followed the release of these albums; I and Love and You was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album while The Carpenter was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards Ceremony. The band’s seventh studio album Magpie and the Dandelion (2013) debuted at number 5 on Billboard 200 chart, making it their highest charting album to date.

In addition to their primary instruments, the members of Mumford & Sons are also accomplished banjo players. Marcus Mumford played banjo on the track “The Cave” from the band’s debut album. Winston Marshall played banjo on the track “Little Lion Man” from the band’s debut album as well as on the track “I Will Wait” from the band’s second album. Ben Lovett played banjo on the track “Lover of the Light” from the band’s second album.
