The Top 10 Folk Music Bands You Need to Know About

Formed in 2014, The Stray Birds are a folk music band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States. The band consists of Oliver Craven (guitar, fiddle, lead vocals), Maya de Vitry (guitar, piano, lead vocals), and Arleigh Kincheloe (upright bass, banjo, harmony vocals). The Stray Birds self-released their debut album in 2012 and have since released two additional studio albums.

The three members of the band are all accomplished musicians in their own right. Craven and de Vitry both grew up playing music together and later attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Kincheloe is a classically trained cellist who has performed with the Calder Quartet and the LA Philharmonic.

The Stray Birds’ sound is rooted in traditional folk music but with a modern twist. Their tight harmonies and intricate instrumentation are reminiscent of classic folk bands like Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills & Nash. But the addition of elements like banjo and fiddle give their music a fresh sound that is all their own.

If you’re a fan of classic folk music or are simply looking for something new to check out, be sure to give The Stray Birds a listen!
