Joan Baez is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and activist. Her contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice. Her father taught mathematics at a local college; her mother served as a civil rights activist and took part in the American Communist Party during Baez’s childhood. Joan’s two sisters – Pauline (born 1940) and Mimi (born 1941) – are also musicians.

One of the most influential female artists of her generation, Baez’s contemporary folk music often included songs of protest or social justice. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela all praised her work; she was awarded the Gallup poll’s most prestigious honor for a musician, the Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2007; and received Smithsonian magazine’s American Icon Award in 2016.

Simon and Garfunkel

Simon and Garfunkel were one of the most successful folk rock duos of the 1960s. Their sound was marked by Paul Simon’s poetic lyrics and Art Garfunkel’s countertenor vocals. They rose to prominence with their first album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., which included the hit single “The Sound of Silence”.
