Kurt Cobain’s Life

Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington. Kurt was the son of a waitress, Wendy, and an automotive mechanic, Don Cobain. As a teenager, Kurt began playing guitar and writing songs. He was a member of a number of bands before forming Nirvana with Krist Novoselic in 1987. Nirvana became one of the most successful bands of the early 1990s, releasing their debut album Bleach in 1989.

His upbringing

Born on February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington, Kurt Cobain was a sensitive artist who found himself at odds with the alienated and anguished world of grunge rock. As the frontman for Nirvana, he became the reluctant spokesperson of a generation.

Cobain was the son of a waitress and a mechanic. His parents divorced when he was nine years old, and Cobain and his brother went to live with their father. The split was painful for Cobain, who never reconciled with his father or stepmother. When his father remarried, his new wife had two teenaged children of her own from a previous marriage. As an outsider in his own home, Cobain found it hard to connect with either his teachers or fellow students at school. He was shy and withdrawn and preferred to spend time alone reading comic books or listening to music. His passion for music began early—he started playing drums at an age when most kids are just starting to learn how to read music.

His musical influences

Cobain music was heavily influenced by the punk rock genre. He was particularly fond of the bands The Melvins and Mudhoney. Cobain’s major musical influence was The Pixies. Their song “Where Is My Mind?” Had a significant impact on Nirvana’s song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Other musical influences for Cobain included The Vaselines, Daniel Johnston, and Butthole Surfers.

His battle with addiction

Kurt Cobain was no stranger to hard drugs. He started using them recreationally at the age of 13, took his first heroin at 19, and by 21 he was addicted. He would continue to struggle with addiction for the rest of his life.

Cobain first sought treatment for his addiction in 1989, but he relapsed soon after and continued to use drugs throughout the recording of Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind. He entered rehab again in 1992, but left after just a few days.

In early 1994, Cobain entered into what would be his final rehabilitation program. He detoxed from heroin and then moved into a sober living house in Los Angeles. He was there for less than two weeks before he left to return to Seattle.

On April 8, 1994, Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
