Reggae Music History

Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, “Do the Reggay” was the first popular song to use the word “reggae”, effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady.

Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by regular beats separated by equal intervals. The tempo is usually slow to moderate at around 60–73 beats per minute (BPM), with some exceptions such as cornerstone tracks like Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up”, which has a tempo of around 100 BPM. Reggae Songs typically use the central hook technique, often centered around offbeat rhythms or guitar riffs. Other common elements include guitars (played dub-style with heavy reverb and echo), bass guitars, one-drop or rockers rhythms, Jamaican Patois-inflected vocals, and politically conscious lyrics.

While ska boasted faster tempos and more complex horn arrangements, rocksteady was slower, noting steady rhythms played on drums, bass and guitar. This new sound became widespread throughout Jamaica by 1968, coinciding with Marley’s return from successful tours of North America and Europe with his band The Wailers. The Wailers’ hit songs such as “Simmer Down”, “Trenchtown Rock” and “Put It On” helped bring rocksteady to its peak popularity between 1967 and 1968. By 1970, reggae had replaced rocksteady as Jamaica’s dominant music genre; while early 1970s songs such as Heptones’ “Ocean of Love” kept alive rocksteady’s commercial viability into that decade.”

Reggae Music Styles

Reggae music is a genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The style is characterized by a strong bass line, catchy melodies, and lyrics with a positive, upbeat message. While the genre is often associated with Jamaica and the Caribbean, it has been popularized all over the world by artists like Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley, and Sean Paul.

There are many different styles of reggae music, each with its own unique flavor. The most popular styles include roots reggae, dub reggae, ska, and dancehall.

Roots reggae is the original form of the genre and is characterized by its spiritual lyrics and classic sound. Dub reggae emerged in the 1970s as a remixing of roots tracks, featuring heavily-reverbed instrumentals and spacey sound effects. Ska is a faster-paced style that developed in Jamaica in the 1960s and was later popularized by British bands like The Specials and Madness. Dancehall is a more recent style that emerged in the 1980s and is characterized by its fast tempo and sexual lyrics.
