Classical

Under the general heading of “classical music,” there are many sub-genres. The three main time periods are generally known as the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras. Within these time periods, there are further subdivisions such as early and late Baroque, or early, middle, and late Classical.

Baroque music (1600-1750) is characterized by heavy use of ornamentation and contrast between loud and soft dynamics. Notable composers from this era include Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel.

Classical music (1750-1820) is marked by a focus on balance, melody, and form. The period saw the rise of famous composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Romantic music (1820-1910) featured highly emotional melodies and extended harmonies. This was the era of the orchestral score, with composers such as Johannes Brahms and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky writing some of their best works for large ensembles.

Jazz

Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States. It emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is seen by many as ” America’s classical music”. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime, as well as European military band music. Intellectuals around the world have hailed jazz as “one of America’s original art forms”.

Rock

Rock is a music genre that developed in the mid-20th century. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and country music. Rockabilly, one of the first genres of rock and roll, developed in the 1950s.

Rock music is characterized by a strong back beat, usually provided by drums, bass guitar, and electric guitar. These instruments are sometimes supplemented with keyboards such as pianos, Hammond organs, and synthesizers. The lead guitar provides melody lines or guitar riffs, which help to define the song’s structure and form. Vocal harmony is an important part of rock music; many songs feature more than one singer singing harmony parts.

In its early stages, rock music was often seen as a rebellious alternative to mainstream pop music. As it developed, however, it absorbed influences from all genres of popular music, making it one of the most diverse and dynamic genres of music ever created.

Pop

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular (and can include any style).

Pop instrumentals are songs without lyrics or traditional singing, which rely on instruments for the majority of their sound. These are often used as background music or as theme songs for television shows and movies. Pop instrumentals can be any style of music, from jazz to rock to classical.

Some well-known pop instrumentals include “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin, “Rhinestone Cowboy” by Glen Campbell, “A Summer Place” by Percy Faith, “Love Story” by Francis Lai, “Theme from A Fistful of Dollars” by Ennio Morricone, and ” Axel F” by Harold Faltermeyer.

Hip-Hop

Hip-hop, also spelled hip hop or hiphop is a rhythm focused popular music style, originating from New York City in the 1970s. It is characterized by four distinct elements; MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Hip hop music developed as part of hip hop culture, which includes the aforementioned elements as well as beatboxing, local dance styles and fashion. While often used to refer narrowly to rap music, hip hop is sometimes used interchangeably with the term “the hip hop culture”.

Country

Country instrumental music typically features acoustic guitars, banjos, fiddles, and steel guitars. The music has a relaxed, easy-going feel that is perfect for chilling out or dancing. Popular country artists include Garth Brooks, George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Kenny Chesney.
