History

Funk Volume was an American independent record label founded in 2008 by Damien Ritter and Dale Stewart. Funk Volume was known for its roster of hip-hop artists, which included Hopsin, SwizZz, Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton, and Kxng Crooked. The label was also home to rapper-producer DJ Hoppa. In January 2016, Ritter announced that he was dissolving the label due to creative differences with Stewart.

Funk Volume was founded in 2008 by high school friends Damien Ritter and Dale Stewart. The label’s first release was Hopsin’s EP, Pans in the Kitchen (2008). In 2013, Funk Volume released Hopsin’s third album Knock Madness (2013), which peaked at number two on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number four on the US Billboard 200 chart. That same year, Kxng Crooked left Shady Records and joined Funk Volume. In 2014, Strange Music Inc. sued Damien Ritter and Funk Volume over claims of breach of contract and fraud; however, the case was later settled out of court.

In 2015, Funk Volume released Hopsin’s fourth album Pound Syndrome (2015), which peaked at number 24 on the US Billboard 200 chart. That same year, DJ Hoppa left Funk Volume due to creative differences. On January 5th 2016 co-founder Damien Ritter announced that he was dissolving Funk Volume due to creative differences with Dale Stewart leading many to believe that this was simply a power struggle between the two business partners .

History

The label was home to artists Hopsin, SwizZz, Dizzy Wright, Kato, and no longer with the label; Ex-artists include Funk Volume co-founder and former president Dame Ritter, and producers Dj Hoppa and Kato.

The label released its first album ‘Funk Volume 2012’ on June 12, 2012. The album featured all of the Funk Volume roster at the time including SwizZz, Dizzy Wright, Kato, Kayoo & Kent Money. Hopsin’s album ‘Knock Madness’ was the next release from the album on November 26, 2013. This was then followed by SwizZz’s debut studio album ‘Habbits & Contradictions’ on January 22, 2013. After a short break from releases, Funk Volume returned with Hopsin’s second studio album ‘Raw’ on November 24, 2014 as well as Dizzy Wright’s second album ‘The First Agreement’ on December 9th 2014

On January 27th 2016 it was revealed that Funk Volume had split up due to personal differences between co-founder Dame Ritter and artist Hopsin. Since then both parties have gone their separate ways with Hopsin starting his own label Undercover Prodigy while Dame has created his own called City of Gods

Strange Music is an American independent record label founded in 2000 by Travis O’Guin and Tech N9ne.
