George Strait was born in Poteet, Texas, the son of John Byron Strait Sr., a math teacher, and Doris Jean Couser, a schoolteacher. He grew up in Pearsall, Texas, where he attended Pearsall High School. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1971 and served in the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii.

After his discharge from the army in 1973, he returned to Texas and enrolled at Southwest Texas State University (now known as Texas State University) in San Marcos. He began singing with a folk-rock group called Stoney Ridge with whom he played guitar and wrote songs. While at university he joined The Ace in the Hole Band, which enjoyed regional success.

Strait began his professional music career as a performer at various honky tonks and clubs around South Texas while still attending university. He eventually signed with MCA Records in Nashville after being discovered by Haggard’s fiddle player Hank Williams III.

Strait’s debut album Strait Country was released in 1981 and contained two singles that reached Number One on the Billboard Country charts: “Unwound” and “Down Louisiana Way”. His second album Strait from the Heart followed in 1982 and produced three more Number One singles: “Fool Hearted Memory”, “A Fire I Can’t Put Out”, and “You Look So Good In Love”.
