About George Gershwin

George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 26, 1898. He was the second son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, Morris and Rosa Gershovitz. He was named Jacob Gershwine at birth, after his paternal grandfather, but later had his name legally changed to George.

Gershwin began his musical career as a song plugger on Tin Pan Alley, but soon began composing his own tunes. His first big hit was the song “Swanee” in 1919. He went on to write such classics as “The Man I Love,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and “I Got Rhythm.” In 1924, he wrote his first opera, “Blue Monday,” based on a Fats Waller song. It was not a success.

In 1925, Gershwin wrote “Rhapsody in Blue” for bandleader Paul Whiteman’s groundbreaking jazz concert at Aeolian Hall in New York City. The piece was an instant sensation and launched Gershwin’s career as a serious composer. He went on to write several successful Broadway musicals, including “Oh, Kay!,” “Funny Face,” and “Girl Crazy.”

Gershwin’s biggest success came with his opera “Porgy and Bess.” The work debuted on Broadway in 1935 and was met with mixed reviews. Some praised its innovative score, while others found the subject matter--a love story set among African-Americans in Charleston’s Catfish Row--to be offensive. Nevertheless, the work has become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world.

Gershwin died of a brain tumor at the age of 38 on July 11, 1937. He left behind a body of work that includes some of the most popular songs ever written.

His other works

George Gershwin was an American composer of popular music, writing for both Broadway and the classical concert hall. His compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are now as familiar to listeners as any in the history of music.

In addition to “Rhapsody in Blue” and “An American in Paris”, other well-known works by Gershwin include the operas “Porgy and Bess” (1935) and “Of Thee I Sing” (1931), the jazz standard “I Got Rhythm” (1930), the song “Someone to Watch Over Me” (1926), the piano prelude “Piano Roll Blues” (1923) , and dozens of other songs written for Broadway shows and Hollywood films.
