In 1961, he enlisted in the US Army; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. He played with ivory-tickling R&B greats like Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and Little Richard before being discovered by Animals bassist Chas Chandler and shipped off to London to make records with Jeff Beck and Noel Redding as part of The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
