Johnson (the “Father of Gospel Music”), Fanny Crosby (the “Queen of Gospel Music”), Philip Bliss, Frank Ewart, Isaac Watts3 and Charles Wesley.4 There have been several attempts to classify different styles of gospel music.5
The term “gospel song” originally referred to a particularly religious song associated with a sermon.6 In more recent years, gospel songs have been called “contemporary gospel music” or “black gospel music”.7
