Introduction

The Gospel Music Contest 2009 was an event organized by Christian Music Promotions, Inc. (CMP) to help unsigned and undiscovered Christian music artists get exposure and recognition. The event was held from May 1-3, 2009 in Nashville, TN.

Over 100 artists submitted songs for consideration, and a panel of industry professionals narrowed it down to the top 12 finalists. These finalists competed in a live showcase at the Nashville Music Conference, with the grand prize winner being determined by audience vote.

The Gospel Music Contest 2009 was open to any solo artist or band that self-identified as a Christian artist. There was no age limit, and all genres of Christian music were welcome.

What is the Gospel Music Contest 2009?

Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced back to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Cheering also occurred to add to the musical experience. The first published use of the term “gospel song” probably appeared in 1874.
