But soon, it became a style unto itself, characterized by its own distorted guitars, angsty lyrics, and dark sensibilities.

By the end of the decade, grunge had been eclipsed by other alternative rock genres such as Britpop and nu metal.

Alice in Chains- Another hugely popular grunge band, Alice in Chains was known for their dark and heavy sound. Alice in Chains was formed in 1987 and rose to fame with the release of their album “Facelift” in 1990. The album contained the hit single “Man in the Box” which helped propel the band to stardom.

Soundgarden- Soundgarden was one of the pioneers of grunge music, forming in 1984. Soundgarden’s sound was heavier and more metal-influenced than some of their fellow grunge bands. The band achieved mainstream success with the release of their album “Superunknown” in 1994 which contained the hit single “Black Hole Sun.”

Pearl Jam- Pearl Jam is one of the best-selling artists of all time and is one of the most successful bands to come out of the grunge movement. Pearl Jam was formed in 1990 and released their debut album “Ten” later that year. The album was a commercial and critical success, propelled by the popularity of singles such as “Alive” and “Jeremy.”

Alice in Chains – “Would?”

Alice in Chains is one of the most influential grunge bands of all time, and “Would?” is one of their most well-known songs. This holiday season, why not add it to your Christmas playlist?

“Would?” was originally released in 1992 as part of the soundtrack to the Cameron Crowe film, Singles. The song is about the lead singer of Alice in Chains, Layne Staley, pondering what he would do if he had the chance to reconnect with a former love. Even though the song is about loss and regret, there’s something about the melody and Staley’s voice that makes it perfect for a Christmas playlist.

Nirvana – “Heart-Shaped Box”

Released in 1993 as the lead single from In Utero, Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” is a haunting and atmospheric track that would be perfect for a Christmas playlist. The song was inspired by a dream that frontman Kurt Cobain had, in which he was presented with a Heart-Shaped Box containing “something he knew he would love, but when he opened it, it was only full of rotting flesh and bones.” The lyrics are full of references to Christianity and death, making it a dark and thought-provoking Christmas song.

Soundgarden – “Black Hole Sun”

From the album Ten, “Jeremy” is about a student who shot himself in front of his classmates. It’s a heavy song, but it has a great message behind it.

Stone Temple Pilots – “Creep”

Stone Temple Pilots are one of the most popular and well-known grunge bands of the early 1990s. Formed in San Diego, they released their debut album Core in 1992. The album included the song “Creep”, which became a huge hit. The success of “Creep” propelled Stone Temple Pilots to stardom, and they went on to release four more studio albums before disbanding in 2003.
