Alice in Chains- “Would?”

Alice in Chains is one of the most successful and well-known grunge bands of all time, and their cover of “Would?” is one of the best examples of the genre. The original song was written by lead singer Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell, and was first released on the band’s 1992 album, Dirt. The cover features a heavy guitar sound and Staley’s signature raspy vocals, and is widely considered to be one of Alice in Chains’ best songs.

Nirvana- “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Pearl Jam- “Jeremy”

“Jeremy” is a song by the American rock band Pearl Jam, with lyrics written by frontman Eddie Vedder and music written by bassist Jeff Ament. “Jeremy” was released as the third single from the band’s debut album Ten in 1992. The song is one of Pearl Jam’s best-known singles.

The video features shots of Jeremy Wade Delle, a real high school student who shot himself in front of his classmates at Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas, on January 8, 1991. The video was directed by Mark Pellington and aired on MTV’s 120 Minutes on February 21, 1992.

The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remains one of Pearl Jam’s most popular songs. In 2010, Rolling Stone ranked it number 336 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and it was voted number five on VH1’s “Top 20 Countdown: Selections From VH1’s Greatest Songs of the ’90s”.

Soundgarden- “Black Hole Sun”

Soundgarden is one of the most influential bands of the grunge genre, and “Black Hole Sun” is one of their most well-known songs. The song was released in 1994 as part of the album Superunknown. It peaked at number two on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1995. The cover art for the single features a black hole with a starburst around it, which was created by artist Chris Van Der Vaart.

Stone Temple Pilots- “Sex Type Thing”

Stone Temple Pilots’ “Sex Type Thing” is a great example of a grunge music cover. The original song was released in 1992, and the cover was released in 1993. The cover is performed by the band Blind Melon.

The cover version is darker and heavier than the original, with a slower tempo and heavier instrumentation. The lyrics are also changed slightly, with the word “woman” being replaced with “girl” in the first verse.

Other notable grunge music covers include Nirvana’s cover of Lead Belly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” Alice in Chains’ cover of Neil Young’s “Down by the River,” and Pearl Jam’s cover of The Who’s “I Can’t Explain.”
