Introduction

The Afghan Whigs are an American rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, formed in 1986. Originally a grunge group, they later evolved into a more soul-influenced and psychedelic-tinged band. They released their first album independently in 1988 and their final album for Sub Pop Records in 2014.

The Afghan Whigs achieved mainstream success with their 1993 album Gentlemen, which peaked at number 99 on the Billboard 200 chart and generated the single “Gentlemen”. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 1998, the band released 1965, which features the singles “Debonair” and “My Enemy”. The Afghan Whigs disbanded in 2001 but reunited in 2006 for a world tour.

In 2012, Greg Dulli announced that the Afghan Whigs had begun work on a new album for release in 2013; however, it was ultimately not released until early 2014. On October 28, 2014, Sub Pop Records released Do to the Beast—the band’s first studio album in 16 years—which debuted at number 26 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart.

Grunge Music

Grunge music is a subgenre of alternative rock and a style of punk rock that emerged in the mid-1980s. The term “grunge” was used to describe Seattle bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. Grunge music is characterized by heavy guitar riffs, distorted sounds, and lyrics about angst and alienation.

Discography

The Afghan Whigs are an American rock band formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1986 by guitarist Greg Dulli, bassist John Curley, and drummer Steve Earle. The band has since released seven studio albums, two compilation albums and one live album. They have undergone several lineup changes, with Dulli being the sole constant member.

The Afghan Whigs’ music has been classified as alternative rock, college rock, grunge and hard rock. Pitchfork described the band as “guitar-driven auteurs making some of the most emotionally charged alt-rock of their era”, while AllMusic declared them “one of America’s most intriguing and original bands”.

The Afghan Whigs’ debut album Big Top Halloween was released in 1988 on the local Cinco Bam label. The album was co-produced by Steve Krahnke and the band, and Krahnke would go on to produce all of the band’s subsequent albums until 1999’s 1965. Big Top Halloween received positive reviews from critics, with AllMusic calling it a “solid debut that hinted at even better things to come”, while Trouser Press praised its “top-flight songwriting”.

The band’s second album Up in It was released in 1990 on Sub Pop Records. Up in It was co-produced by Jack Endino and the band. The album marked a shift in sound for the band towards a more abrasive guitar-driven sound, with Trouser Press writing that “the guitars are so upfront they threaten to swallow everything else whole”. The Afghan Whigs garnered mainstream attention with the release of Gentlemen in 1993. The album peaked at number 51 on the Billboard 200 chart, and features the singles “Gentlemen”, “Debonair” and “Going to Town”.

Black Love was released in 1996 and marked a further shift towards a more R&B and soul influenced sound. Black Love debuted at number 32 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of 500,000 copies in the United States. 1965 was released in 1998 and is a collection of outtakes from throughout the band’s career up to that point. Congregation followed in 1999; it did not achieve commercial success similar to Gentlemen or Black Love but still peaked at number 81 on Billboard 200 chart. After touring extensively behind Congregation, Dulli disbanded The Afghan Whigs in 2001 due to creative differences with his bandmates Curley and Mike Mills (guitarist).
In 2014, Dulli reformed The Afghan Whigs with bassist Dave Rosser (who had previously played with Twilight Singers) along with new members Pat Sullivan (guitar), Jon Skibic (guitar)and Cully Symington (drums). THE AFGHAN WHIGS’ DISCOGRAPHY:
