Grunge music was a genre that emerged in the early 1990s and gained popularity in the Seattle music scene. Grunge music is often characterized by its raw and angsty sound, as well as its lyrics which often deal with topics like depression and alienation.

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit
The early 90s was a time when grunge music reigned supreme. One of the biggest bands to come out of this era was Nirvana, who shot to fame with their hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. The song became an anthem for disaffected youth and is still considered one of the greatest songs of all time.

Pearl Jam – Jeremy

In 1992, Pearl Jam released the song “Jeremy” off of their album Ten. The song is about a boy named Jeremy who brings a gun to school and opens fire, shooting himself in front of his classmates. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder wrote the song based on a true story about a student who shot himself in front of his classmates at his high school.

The song was Pearl Jam’s breakthrough hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and becoming one of the band’s best-known songs. The music video for “Jeremy” was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards, winning three, including Best Group Video.

Alice in Chains – Would?

From the 1992 album “Dirt,” “Would?” is one of Alice in Chain’s biggest hits. The song is about Layne Staley’s friend, Andrew Wood, who was the lead singer of Mother Love Bone. Wood died of a heroin overdose in 1990, before the release of “Dirt.” The song is a tribute to him, and it’s one of the most poignant examples of grunge music.

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun

Soundgarden was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Soundgarden was one of the seminal bands of the grunge movement and is commonly credited as one of the progenitors of the genre.

Black Hole Sun became one of Soundgarden’s most well-known songs. The music video, directed by Fred Roulston and Mark Pellington, won five MTV Video Music Awards.

Stone Temple Pilots – Interstate Love Song

Stone Temple Pilots released their second album, Purple, in 1994. The first single, “interstate Love Song” peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was the band’s most successful single. The song is a tribute to the band’s travels on the interstate highway system during their tours.
