The History of Grunge

Nirvana

Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. It was founded by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting and best-known being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990. Pearl Jam is an American rock band, formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. The band’s original lineup consisted of Eddie Vedder (lead vocals), Mike McCready (lead guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass). The band’s current lineup includes Vedder, Ament, McCready, and Matt Cameron (drums). Boom Gaspar (piano) has also been a session/touring member with the band since 2002. Drummers Jack Irons, Matt Chamberlain and Dave Krusen preceded Cameron as interim members of the band.

Formed after the demolition of Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Soundgarden

One of the most innovative and successful grunge bands, Soundgarden was formed in Seattle in 1984 by singer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. The band released its debut album, Ultramega OK, in 1988, followed by Louder Than Love in 1989. Soundgarden’s third album, Badmotorfinger (1991), yielded the band’s first mainstream hit single, “Rusty Cage,” which was followed by the release of the Grammy Award-winning single “Jesus Christ Pose” in 1992.

In 1994, Soundgarden released its fourth album, Superunknown, which entered the Billboard 200 chart at number one and went on to sell more than five million copies in the United States. The album yielded a number of hit singles, including “Black Hole Sun,” “Spoonman,” and “My Wave.” Following a world tour in support of Superunknown, Soundgarden went on hiatus in 1997. The band reunited in 2010 and released its sixth studio album, King Animal, in 2012.

Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987 by guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. The initial lineup was rounded out by drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr, who was replaced in 1993 by Mike Inez. Although widely associated with grunge music, the band’s sound encompasses heavy metal elements.

Early in their career, the band’s musical style was compared to that of their contemporaries Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden; though they did not achieve the same commercial success as these other bands, Alice in Chains were one of the most successful music acts of the 1990s. With five Grammy Award nominations, they have been called “the heaviest band of the ’90s”. The band’s 1992 album Dirt has been certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Since its release, Dirt has sold over 6 million copies worldwide.

Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. The band’s first studio album, Facelift (1990), was released on August 21, 1990. The album went through several re-releases on different labels; it became a best-seller and was certified double platinum by the RIAA for two million copies shipped to stores. Singles such as “Man in the Box”, “Sea of Sorrow”, and “Would?” were well received on rock radio and MTV. The band toured extensively for this album throughout 1990 and 1991 appearing at festivals such as Donington Monsters of Rock In support of Facelift from September 1990 to August 1991. Their second album Dirt (1992) debuted at number six on Billboard 200 Top Album Chart and was Alice in Chain’s first album to be certified quadruple platinum by RIAA selling more than four million copies

“Would?” is a song by the American rock band Alice in Chains. It was released as a single in May 1992, and is the fourth single from the album Dirt (1992). The song peaked at number 18 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was included on Alice in Chains’ greatest hits album, Music Bank (1999), and was released as a promotional single for that album. “Would?” was written by guitarist Jerry Cantrell for his friend Andrew Wood, frontman of the bands Mother Love Bone and temple of the dog. Wood died of a heroin overdose in 1990.
