What is grunge music?

Grunge music is a type of rock music that emerged in the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area. Grunge music is characterized by a dirty, distorted sound, often created by over-driven electric guitars and heavy bass guitar riffs. Lyrics are typically angsty and deal with topics such as social alienation, apathy, and disaffection.

The history of grunge music.

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock and a subculture that emerged during the mid-1980s in the Pacific Northwest U.S. state of Washington, particularly in Seattle and nearby towns. The early grunge movement revolved around Seattle’s independent record label Sub Pop and the region’s DIY punk scene. By the early 1990s its popularity had spread, with grunge bands appearing in California, then emerging in other parts of the United States and Australia.

Grunge was commercially successful in the early 1990s, due in part to the success of Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind, but many bands were uncomfortable with their new-found popularity and success. In 1993, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain committed suicide, which many see as symbolic of the decline of grunge.
