Introduction

Arlo Davy Guthrie (born July 10, 1947) is an American folk singer-songwriter. Like his father, Woody Guthrie, he is known for singing songs of protest against social injustice. Arlo’s best-known work is his comical song “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree”, which protests against the Vietnam War draft. His only top-40 hit was a cover of Steve Goodman’s “City of New Orleans”. His song “Massachusetts”, about the history and beauty of the state, has become an unofficial anthem of the state. Guthrie has also been involved in environmental activism and MoveOn.org.

Early life and family

Woody Guthrie was born in Okemah, Oklahoma, the son of Nora Belle (née Sherman) and Charles Edward Guthrie. His parents named him Woody Guthrie, after Woodrow Wilson, the then-popular Democratic president. Woody Guthrie’s father was a farmer and later a land surveyor for the government; his mother was the daughter of an Indian agent of Creek and Cherokee descent. Guthrie was exposed to music at an early age with ballads and folk songs sung by family members. Unlike many folk musicians of his generation, he learned to play not only folk and popular songs from sheet music, but how to “fake” chords of songs he hadn’t yet learned to play.

Career

American singer-songwriter and folk musician Woody Guthrie was one of the most influential American musicians of the twentieth century. His career spanned nearly four decades, during which he wrote hundreds of songs and performed with some of the most prominent musicians of his day. Guthrie’s work was deeply rooted in the American folk tradition, and his songs often addressed social and political issues. He is best known for his song “This Land Is Your Land,” which has become an anthem for the American people.

Death and legacy

Guthrie’s health began to decline in the mid-1950s. He was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease, a degenerative genetic disorder that attacks the nerve cells in the brain and produces involuntary body movements as well as mental deterioration. Guthrie was aware of the diagnosis, though he did not publicize it until his final years. The disease gradually robbed him of the ability to speak, write, or play music. In 1966, he moved into Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey, where he spent the last years of his life.

Guthrie died on October 3, 1967, at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital at the age of 55. His ashes were scattered over his ranch in Oklahoma. In 1968, his son Arlo released the album Alice’s Restaurant Massacree, which included “Alice’s Restaurant”, a 18-minute talking blues song about getting arrested for littering and having to appear in court; the song is sometimes seen as an anthem of anti-establishment youth.

Discography

Woody Guthrie released a total of 26 studio albums between his debut in 1940 and his death in 1967. These albums spanned a wide range of genres, from folk to blues to children’s music. In addition to his original work, Guthrie also recorded a number of cover songs, which helped to solidify his place as one of the most important folk musicians of the 20th century.
