Hangout Music Festival is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing performances! If you’re a fan of rock music, you’ll definitely want to check out these acts – they’re some of the best in the business.

Introduction

The Hangout Music Festival takes place in Gulf Shores, Alabama and features a wide variety of music genres. In addition to rock, you can expect to hear plenty of hip-hop, EDM, and pop. As far as rock goes, there is something for everyone, from classic rock to alternative to metal. Here are just a few of the rock genres you can expect to hear at the Hangout Music Festival.

Classic Rock

Classic Rock

Classic rock is a radio format which developed from the album-oriented rock (AOR) format in the early 1980s. In the United States, classic rock plays music ranging generally from the late 1960s to the late 1980s, primarily focusing on commercially successful hard rock popularized in the 1970s.[1] It sometimes includes artists from the early 1990s through the present day who appeal to older audiences or are known to have strong appeal to a classic rock audience.

The classic rock format evolved from AOR radio stations that were attempting to appeal to an older audience by including familiar songs of the past with current hits. In 1980, AOR station MCA Records launched itself as “the first classic rock station” on FM radio.[2] Throughout the 1980s, classic rock quickly became one of the most popular radio formats and began to be referred as “album-oriented rock” as musical artists released albums instead of singles.[3]

Hard Rock

Known for its loud, aggressive sound, hard rock is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Hard rock is characterized by heavy guitar riffs, powerful drums, and tough lyrics. Some of the most popular hard rock bands include AC/DC, Kiss, Motley Crue, and Van Halen.

Progressive Rock

Progressive rock is a broad genre of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom and United States throughout the mid to late 1960s. Initially termed “progressive pop”, the style was an outgrowth of psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop traditions in favor of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz, folk, or classical music. Additional elements contributed to its formation, including unbeaten rock and roll andbach music.

Progressive rock bands pushed ” king Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer” developing a complex but classically influenced approach to writing music. They created lengthy songs with irregular structures and time signatures that drew on influences from jazz and other genres. In some cases they used electronic instruments and synthesizers.

Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic rock, also referred to as psych rock or acid rock, is a genre of rock music that emerged in the mid-1960s and is influenced by psychedelic culture. Musically, psychedelic rock is characterized by extended improvised jams, sonic experimentation, and retro influences.

Punk Rock

The roots of punk rock go back to the 1950s, when a group of young musicians in London started playing raw and aggressive rock & roll. These bands, who were influenced by the music of American rockers like Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley, also incorporated elements of other genres, including ska and reggae. In the mid-1970s, punk rock became a major force in England with the rise of bands like the Sex Pistols and the Clash. By the early 1980s, punk had spread to America, where it spawned a new generation of bands, including Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys. Punk rock continues to be a major force in both America and Europe.

Alternative Rock

Alternative rock is a broad umbrella term that refers to rock music that falls outside of the mainstream. The genre is notoriously hard to define, but it typically includes music that is experimental, independent, or simply doesn’t fit into conventional rock sub-genres. Alternative rock includes a wide range of sub-genres, including but not limited to: indie rock, post-punk, math rock, emo, noise rock, and post-rock.

Grunge

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in Seattle.

Grunge music is characterized by a heavy, aggressive sound that is sometimes considered to be a response to the pop music and consumerism of the 1980s. Grunge fashion is often associated with flannel shirts, ripped jeans, and messy hair.

Some of the most popular grunge bands include Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.

Indie Rock

Indie rock is a genre of rock music that emerged in the 1980s and became popular in the 1990s. Indie rock is characterized by a DIY ethic, independent or underground origins, and a disdain for the mainstream industry.

The term “indie rock” is often used to refer to music that is released on independent record labels, or to music that is not commercially successful. Indie rock artists are often signed to independent record labels and may not be able to obtain mainstream success.

Indie rock has been described as “a style of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and North America in the 1980s, with a focus on guitar-based melodies and lyrics with literary or introspective themes”.

Post-Rock

Post-rock is a genre that is often characterized by the use of guitars, drums and other traditional rock instrumentation, but with experimental, non-rock influences. This can include incorporating elements of electronic music, ambient music, noise music and even Jazz. Post-rock bands are often known for their slow buildups and crescendos. Some well-known post-rock bands include Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Sigur Ros.
